The story of this Chicago renovation is one of real revival. We affectionately referred to it as the Phoenix Rising – as it literally rose from the ashes. A fire in the walls of the living room devastated the first floor and the rooms directly above and below the space. With fire comes smoke and with the fire department comes water – so the devastation was really a combination of the three. More than anything, we’re grateful everyone was ok, physically. And, we wanted to help them have a place to come home to that really felt like their dream home – even amidst challenging circumstances. The before pictures are hard to see, but knowing that the family was unharmed, the afters are that much more special.  

Designing a Chicago Renovation with Legacy in Mind

In the living room, stained built-in cabinetry and a marble mosaic fireplace surround were chosen to honor tradition, creating a design that feels like it’s always been there.

Layering Warmth & Function

Warm woods, cognac leather and stained beams surround this space in warmth. Thoughtfully placed brass picture lights illuminate the adult lounge bookcases, while family treasures, antique artwork and games fill the shelves with meaningful moments.

In this Chicago renovation, the home’s long and narrow footprint—typical of many city residences—inspired a layout of three distinct yet connected spaces. We knew our clients wanted a place where they could entertain adults while still feeling welcoming and functional for their young children and friends.

The adult lounge at the front of the home benefits from beautiful morning light, making it the perfect retreat for a quiet cup of coffee. In the evening, it’s a cozy destination while the kids play in the third-floor playroom or enjoy a movie in the basement lounge.

Next, the dining room connects the lounge and the kitchen, centered by a sculptural light fixture and collected artwork. Finally, the kitchen anchors the back of the home with stone countertops, an impactful range hood, and thoughtful details like a beadboard ceiling and stained window sills—elements that reflect the original charm of the home.

Infusing Personality Into Every Detail

Another priority in this Chicago renovation was making sure we amplified the clients’ great personal style. A rich green kitchen, fun mudroom color and bold wallpaper in the powder room were just a few of the design decisions that brought their personality front and center.

Design for Play and Escape

The lower level also offers a moody vibe that welcomes a movie night- complete with the client’s bourbon and graphic star wars movie poster collection.  

The daughter’s bedroom also sustained damage, so we gave her a fresh start with the dreamy makeover it deserved. 

All-in-all, while the fire was devastating and disruptive to say the least, when the family moved back in (just days before Christmas), they were able to reunite with their home, fall back in love with its original charm and celebrate all the improvements that will create the backdrop to their story as their young family grows.
